Scary Issues with Uber and Lyft

Choose Legally Permitted Drivers for your Safety

Licensed cab drivers undergo criminal background checks (using fingerprints), motor vehicle record checks and a medical exam before they are issued a permit by the city of Memphis, and must renew their permits (and those checks) every year.  They are also subject to random drug tests.  Those background checks and the MVR checks are administered by the city and utilize offical background databases.

The drivers for "transportation network companies" (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft are not permitted.  They are "gypsy" or illegal cabs. While those companies say they conduct background checks, there are scary issues and incidents involving drivers who "passed" and are being allowed to drive.

Watch this video from NBC in California on Risky Rides to see some examples of drivers working for Uber. These drivers would never be permitted to work as a licensed cabbie.  And they shouldn't be.  Public safety is one of the main reasons transportation companies are regulated.  While Uber and Lyft may appear to be "legitimate" because of their marketing, they are essentially illegal, unregulated cab companies.
